HARRISBURG – The Broadband Communications Association of Pennsylvania (BCAP) expresses its sympathies as the world mourns the loss of Ted Turner, one of the most iconic pioneers in the cable industry:
“Ted Turner was one of the foremost pioneers in cable,” said BCAP President Todd Eachus. “He revolutionized cable programming, beginning with 24-hour news and then reshaped how entertainment was consumed for a global audience. He built a media empire that not only included entertainment, news and sports, but technology as well. His use of satellite technology made it easier for even smaller cable operators to carry programming to viewers.
“Like most of his fellow cable pioneers, Ted took saw the potential of what the industry could be and transformed the industry into concepts that continue to succeed today,” Eachus continued. “Our industry is indebted to the vision and work of Ted Turner. While we mourn his loss today, we will celebrate his contributions for generations to come. We share the sadness of his loss with his family and dear friends.”
After taking over his father’s billboard company in 1963, Turner expanded into broadcasting by purchasing a struggling Atlanta TV station (WTCG) in 1970. He pioneered the “superstation” concept with TBS and launched iconic channels including CNN, TNT and Cartoon Network. Additionally, he owned the Atlanta Braves and Atlanta Hawks, famously managing the Braves for one game in 1977. He also won the America’s Cup yacht race in 1977.
